COMMITMENT TO NATURE
COMMITMENT TO NATURE
Project Salt Run exists to demonstrate that adventure, business and community can all be powerful forces for good. Our expedition,100 marathons in 100 days along India’s historic Inland Customs Line, is not only a physical challenge, but a statement of intent: that protecting people and planet must sit at the heart of everything we do.
This policy sets out our commitment to respecting, protecting and restoring nature across every aspect of Project Salt Run’s planning, delivery and legacy.
1. Our Guiding Principles
Respect for Nature – We recognise that the natural world sustains all life. Our decisions and actions will always seek to minimise harm and actively contribute to ecological regeneration.
Transparency and Accountability – We are open about our environmental impact and strive for continuous improvement in our practices.
Collaboration for Impact – We work with purpose-led businesses, local communities and environmental charities to amplify our positive impact.
2. Our Environmental Commitments
a. Supporting Global Environmental Action
We have pledged 1% of all Crowdfunder donations to The Green Runners, a 1% for the Planet environmental partner, joining a global community of businesses and individuals working to protect our planet. To date we have donated £480 to this cause.
Our wider goal is to raise £1 million for 1% for the Planet and its partner charities including those tackling clean water access, ecosystem protection, and environmental justice through Frankwater, Big Change and Client Earth.
b. Reducing Our Carbon Footprint
Vegetarian Expedition The entire Project Salt Run journey is vegetarian, significantly reducing our food related carbon emissions.
Buying Local Wherever possible, we source food, materials and services locally, supporting local economies and reducing transport emissions.
Borrowing, Repairing and Reusing Equipment We are borrowing, repairing or reusing as much kit as possible rather than purchasing new. When new items are required, we seek to partner with brands whose values align with ours, ideally those already committed to 1% for the Planet, B Corp Certified, Better Business Network members or with other recognised sustainability accreditations.
Sustainable Brand Partnerships – These choices have led us to collaborate with a range of responsible and sustainability-led brands that share our mission to protect the planet.
Minimal Waste We prioritise reusable, repairable, and recyclable equipment. Single-use plastics are avoided unless absolutely necessary for safety reasons.
Low-Impact Travel Our support vehicles are selected for efficiency and shared transport is encouraged for all crew and guests.
c. Restoring and Protecting Nature
The route of Project Salt Run follows the old Inland Customs Line, a 19th-century “hedge” that once divided communities and ecosystems. By running it, we symbolically reconnect people and nature, turning a colonial barrier into a path of hope and regeneration.
We will document and share stories of the landscapes, wildlife and communities we encounter, using storytelling as a tool for environmental education and advocacy.
We will explore partnerships with local reforestation and conservation groups along the route, supporting restoration efforts wherever possible.
3. Partnership with the Better Business Network
Project Salt Run is powered and supported by the Better Business Network, a community of purpose-driven organisations united by the belief that business can be a force for good. Through this partnership, we share resources, best practice, and collective action ensuring that our environmental standards reflect the highest possible level of integrity and ambition.
4. Measurement and Continuous Improvement
We will measure and record as much as we can of the environmental impact of Project Salt Run, including emissions, waste and fundraising outcomes.
We will seek independent advice and feedback from sustainability experts within the Better Business Network to refine our practices.
Following the expedition, we will publish a Nature Impact Report, detailing learnings, challenges, and our ongoing commitments.
5. Legacy and Long-Term Impact
Project Salt Run is more than a 100-day journey; it is a catalyst for lifelong change. Our commitment to nature will continue beyond the expedition through:
Supporting ongoing conservation projects funded via 1% for the Planet and continuing to advocate for the 1% for the Planet global network and long term giving strategy.
Using documentary and storytelling platforms to inspire others to live and work in harmony with nature.
Championing sustainable business practices across the Better Business Network and beyond.
